Most developers build on top of things. I build from underneath them.
For 30 years I have used a single analog: the way a world is built before it is inhabited. You understand what is constant. You map the variables. You construct something that scales in any direction — larger or smaller, simpler or more complex — without destroying itself in the process.
This is not a methodology I learned. It is the closest approximation I can reach to intrinsic truth in any given environment. It is why the same principles that built a trust infrastructure named after my son also built a SaaS meal planning platform, a 30-year catalog of independent music, and a digital agency that has served clients for 25 years.
The post-dotcom industry outlawed this kind of thinking. It replaced whole-system builders with specialists, and specialists with frameworks, and frameworks with abstraction layers nobody fully understands. The platforms that resulted are fragile in ways their builders cannot diagnose because nobody is looking at the full stack.
